BEIRUT, LEBANON (6:47 P.M.) – Reports (not yet confirmed) are emerging that Russian military negotiators have reached a new agreement regarding the evacuation non-ISIS armed rebel groups from southern Damascus.
Sources reporting on the matter state that the evacuation deal is to go into effect immediately – quite literally in the next several hours.
The transfer of rebel fighters from southern Damascus will be simultaneously coordinated with entry of Syrian Army troops into the area to take over long-established militant positions opposing ISIS lines.
The new deal comes after an original agreement to wait for the defeat of Islamic State forces in southern Damascus before evacuating rebel fighters was deemed obsolete.
Circumstances on the ground dictate that the Syrian Army needs to attack ISIS from more directions, and to do that they need control of areas held by rival militants on the eastern flank of the Islamic State’s southern Damascus bastion.
Updates to follow.
