The US exceeded its authority by transferring its embassy in Israel to Jerusalem, the Lebanese Speaker of Parliament Nabih Berri RIA Novosti on Wednesday.
“Lebanon’s position, in regards to all faiths, is 100% against this step. What happened in this case is the abuse of power by those who do not have such a right,” Berry stated.
“Historically, Jerusalem was occupied for hundreds of years; it was later liberated by the Arabs and I can assure that this city will not remain in the hands of Israel,” he continued.
The veteran Lebanese politician is often considered one of the most powerful leaders in the country, as his political party, Harakat Amal, remains a force in many parts of Lebanon.
Earlier in the day, Berri conducted an interview with the Sputnik News Agency in which he told the Russian publication that Hezbollah will remain in Syria until the war is over.
Berri, a strong supporter of Hezbollah, has also been one of Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad’s closest allies.
Harakat Amal and the Syrian government have been close allies since the emergence of the former during the Lebanese Civil War.
