BEIRUT, LEBANON (7:00 A.M.) – A reconciled rebel commander was assassinated in the southern region of Syria on Thursday, a source from the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) told Al-Masdar News.

According to the army source, unknown assailants opened fire on the vehicle of the reconciled rebel commander, Firas Al-Masalameh, as he was traveling northwest of Daraa city.

The source said Masalameh was killed during the attack, which was carried out in the town of Al-Yadoudah.

The assailants reportedly fled the scene after the assassination; they are suspected to be part of a Free Syrian Army (FSA) sleeper cell in the Daraa Governorate.

Masalameh was a former commander in the Free Syrian Army’s Southern Front Brigades before he accepted a reconciliation deal that was sponsored by the Russian Armed Forces.

It is both easy and illogical to assume FSA is resonsible for assassination attempts on reconciled leaders. As there is a pattern of attacks on them, the most logical and only real suspect is Assad’s secret police, with a reputation of assassinations.

Assad is mad to allow this. Who will trust this madman in the future?

The Assad’s secret police gain nothing from a surrendered FSA by assassinating him, Firas Al-Masalameh he was de-fanged when he surrendered. If at all they wanted to do it they could have done it much earlier or should have some very solid reason or he must have involved in certain activities which are considered very harmful militarily. FSA is a group of various Jihadi groups and under so many local terrorists and some of these guys are sleeper cells still active in Daara it is quite possible these terrorists would gain by eliminating him as they want to send out… Read more »
