During the Army-2018 international defense forum, the Russian Helicopters holding (part of the Rostec state corporation) unveiled its first serial Mi-28NM attack helicopter and the Ka-52 helicopter, modernized with regard to combat experience in Syria.

“The Russian Helicopters holding (part of the Rostec state corporation) for the first time presents its newest Mi-28NM [Night Hunter] attack helicopter and the Ka-52 reconnaissance and combat helicopter, upgraded with regard to combat experience. The Mi-28NM displayed at the forum is the first serial modernized Night Hunter,” the company’s press service said in a statement on Tuesday.

The Army-2019 forum runs at the Patriot Congress and Exhibition Center outside Moscow on June 25-30. Exhibition events will also take place in other Russian regions. According to preliminary estimates, the forum on the territory of Russia will be attended by over 1,500 enterprises that will demonstrate more than 27,000 products and technologies.

Mi-28NM Helicopter

The Mi-28NM helicopter gunship is designed to search for and destroy low-speed air targets, tanks, armored and non-armored vehicles as well as enemy manpower in the daytime and at night, in all weather conditions.

The first Mi-28NM helicopter was made in 2009. Being an upgraded variant of the Mi-28N Night Hunter attack helicopter, it differs significantly from its predecessor. The Mi-28NM onboard radar equipment comprises innovative helmet-mounted imaging and pointing system.

The helicopter is equipped with an N025 radar station, which makes it possible to carry out round watch. The upgrade also has a new EW system. In addition to that, the Mi-28 NM helicopter has a modified fuselage and modernized engines; a radio-electronic onboard system and a target sight system; an auxiliary power plant and equipment for communication with unmanned aerial vehicles.

In May, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that 100 modernized Mi-28NM should be delivered to the Russian armed forces by 2028.

Ka-52 Alligator

The upgraded version of the Ka-52 attack helicopter, the Ka-52M, would be created by 2022. The experimental design work on the upgraded helicopter will take into account Russia’s combat experience in Syria.

The Ka-52M will get new power supply and target acquisition systems. Also, following the requirements of Russia’s Defense Ministry, the helicopter’s protection will be enhanced considerably.

    Now look at the the characteristics of two very common cargo aircraft (note: my choice is not to use cargo aircraft in the gunship role, it’s to highlight the capabilities of fixed wing aircraft). Although some choppers are able of mid-air refuelling, it’s really rare, while it’s not a major problem for fixed-wings. Ejecting from a chopper would mean ending looking like a kebab.

    Fixed wing aircraft are cheaper to build, much more reliable (helicopter is as dangerous as a motorbike), you can pilot a dual propeller one with 80 flight hours only while you need 4 years studies for a chopper. You perfectly have a shaft linking the two propellers and have the both running on a single engine for loitering purposes or if an engine fails.
    In terms of short take-off/landing capabilities, the 1961 Bréguet 941S had a 27t MTOW for 8t payload, could take off in 185m, land in 120m and still was able to fly at only 90km/h, it ran on 4x 1,450hp engines…

    Such a pod loaded with 19 guided rockets ranging 10.5-15km weights about 450-500kg
    18 pods would mean 9t and 342 rockets each as powerful as a TOW ATGM.

    A GIAT 30M791, 30mm weights 120kg, shoots up to 2,500RPM and 2,000 rounds weight 800kg.
    Since the aircraft would be stretched, 2 turrets may be considered.

    The 1948 North American AJ Savage bomber had 2x 2,400 hp piston engines, a 23,112 kg MTOW, a 20kN turbojet, 5.5t payload and could fly at 758km/h which is faster than a A-10…

    You can operate such an aircraft from ships as small as the Italian aircraft carrier Giuseppe Garibaldi (180.2m). If necessary, a rocket-assisted take-off system may be installed. Optional folding wings would be smart.
    Nevertheless, it’s not irrealistic, especially using modern composites, to carry as much payload as a WW2 B-29 heavy bomber and a firepower greater than a A-10.
    Wold Kamov build such an aircraft it would end cheaper than Ka-52 (if no jet engine) while carrying more payload than a Flanker and the double of a Su-25.
    You can stay off-range from ManPADS and AA-guns while loitering for many hours, providing permanent air support to boots, hit hundreds of targets, while the jet engine allows to full throttle ultra-low altitude runs, the two turrets can fire on each side at once on programmed targets, cleansing everything detected in a 7km wide strip.
    6 heavy guided bombs like KAB-1500 or as much as 6x SCALP-EG cruise missiles can be carried.

    The job is not to enter first in an area filled with SAMs, it’s similar to what gunship choppers (AH64/Ka-52/M-28N), aircraft (AC-130) or strike aicraft similar to A-10, Su-25, Harrier, A-6 Intruder, etc… all this on cheap to buy/use, easy to maintain platform.
    Performance also allow to participate a strike pack as a bomb-truck…
    With a squadron of such assets, Mali wouldn’t even had to call France for Help at liquidating AQIM/MUJAO etc… With 50-100 like these, Syria or Iraq would have cleansed al-Nusra, ISIS and friends without requesting help from anyone.
