Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said the fact that US forces allegedly do not let people leave the Rukban refugee camp leads to the “very unpleasant idea” that the camp is needed to justify the US’ “illegal military presence” in Syria. He made the comment at a press conference following talks with his Kuwaiti counterpart Sabah Al-Khalid Al-Sabah in Kuwait City on Wednesday.
Lavrov went on to say that according to a survey, up to 95 percent of the Rukban camp population are “voluntarily willing to return to their homes.”
Kuwaiti Foreign Minister Sabah Al-Khalid Al-Sabah mentioned that Syria is “one of the founders of The Arab League,” adding “We stand on returning Syria to normal life, on returning Syria to the Arab family.”
Lavrov’s tour of the Middle East will finish on Thursday in the United Arab Emirates.
