BEIRUT, LEBANON (9:40 P.M.) – The U.S. military withdrawal from Syria will be paused as soon as the number drops to 1,000 troops inside the country, the New York Times reported on Friday.

Citing officials speaking on condition of anonymity, the New York Times reported that the pause will be followed by an assessment of “conditions on the ground”.

The officials told NYT that further withdrawals will occur every six months or so until the number of U.S. military personnel in Syria reaches 400 troop limit.

Furthermore, the officials indicated that the withdrawal timetable will remain ‘fluid’ and contingent on several factors.

The NYT article indicated that the U.S. military may not reach the targeted 400 troop number until the Fall of 2020.

Some of these factors include the contribution of their European allies (France, UK et al.) and the potential implementation of a safe zone with Turkey.

However, the U.S. military may face some major obstacles over the next year, especially with Turkey’s insistence on launching an operation against the Kurdish-led and U.S.-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).

Ankara maintains that the SDF and People’s Protection Units (YPG) are terrorist entities that are merely offshoots of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), who fought a long war against the Turkish military.

The U.S. has relied on the Syrian Democratic Forces to fight the Islamic State (ISIS/ISIL/IS/Daesh) in northern and eastern Syria.

Ankara is pushing Washington to withdraw their forces from Syria and end their military support to the SDF in Syria.

Should Ankara get its way, this may push the SDF and their political wing, the Syrian Democratic Council (SDC), to seek assistance from Damascus in order to prevent a Turkish invasion.

They have no intentions of pulling out and are aware that there will always be something that happens that will give the excuse to stay or increase numbers. Didn’t they say the other day they want to put 200 close to the Syrian / Israel border inside Syria . That means they either anticipate trouble at the Golan Heights or will be close enough to provoke it until there is then they will be able to increase their presence there.

likely correct and most likely there will be a falling out between US and Turkey over SDF. as a result, my prediction is 1300 to 1500 us in Syria. And up to 1.000 french and UK sof. Meanwhile, US will stuff SDF with heavy weapons. This has already started.

@Peter : US now officially have a base in Israel (there was the giant Dimona radar, but it’s a military facility, not a “base”, so you’re more likely to see GIs in Israel.

You live in a Fantasy land. Europeans do not recognize Golan as Israeli real estate and are not going to man Kurdland. US just alienated KSA with this Golan proclamation. Turks will go after YPG and no country trusts the United States. Majority of US Citizens do not want the US in the Middle East and the economy is declining for the middle class who as a whole pay the most in taxes. Why do you think the Pentagon no longer publishes number of civilians they killed or the number of US casualties? There is nonpublic support for any war.… Read more »

Given the USS LIBERTY attack by ISRAEL, I would say they will kill American GI’s in order to provoke a war for the sake of Israel. You think that America is your private army? P.O. Why the h**l would American Generals be stupid enough to be embedded with Israeli? Trump the clueless shrill along with the neocons and Heretic Christian Zionists are living on borrowed time as is nutty and his right wing lunatics.

To Daeshbags Although i can’t see your comment here I did get the e-mail version. Not talking about the US troops in Israel. They said last week that they intended keeping X amount of troops in Syria , a number that changes everyday , and that they would be keeping another two hundred 200 in Syria that they wanted to move closer to the Israeli border. That was the basis of my comment assuming close to the Golan Heights when they had already stated they would keep X amount at Al Tanf.
